Elvis Costello Set to Release Acoustic CD in June
May 15, 2009 – Elvis Costello is having problems describing his new CD, "It's mainly, I guess you would say, bluegrass instrumentation, but they're playing my songs. They're not playing traditional bluegrass songs, and they don't sound like bluegrass songs,” He told Billboard magazine. “They're ballad form. Some of them are ragtime.” He adds, “It's always good to try and find new ways to play songs and to find new sounds to express songs you've already written."

"Secret, Profane & Sugarcane” is due June 2 on Hear Music and is again produced by T-Bone Burnett. (he also produced 1986's 'King of America' & 1989's 'Spike'). The package will be a mixed bag. Costello will revisit some tunes from an unfinished opera about Hans Christian Anderson.

Costello gathered some top-notch musicians in Nashville including Jerry Douglas on dobro, Stuart Duncan on fiddle, Mike Compton on mandolin, Jeff Taylor on accordion and Dennis Crouch on double bass. He told Billboard, "We sat around in a semicircle where we could see each other very readily," Costello recalled. "I was able to direct things and people took the initiative...and they played just beautifully. The playing of the musicians was so responsive it just flowed.”

The album will also include two tunes that Costello wrote for Johnny Cash and two co-writes with Burnett. – by John Beaudin

Diana Krall and Elvis Costello’s Kids Prefer the Hamster Dance     Bookmark and Share
April 22, 2009 – Diana Krall has a sense of humor when it comes to her kids with Elvis Costello. The Jazz superstar says the twins have lots of favorite tunes but they are not usually in their parents discography, "They like everything. They like Frosty the Snowman, this theme from The Mickey Mouse Club called Hot Dog.” Krall talked to Sarah Liss of the CBC about those crazy tunes that her kids play over and over, there’s this thing called the Hamster Dance, which they like. They do their own dance to it — let’s get crazy!” says Krall, “They also like Yes We Have No Bananas. That’s a pretty good one, not too big a hit. I’ll turn on the radio and start singing a song and they just pick it up. It’s kinda scary.”

Krall, whose new CD, ‘Quiet Nights’ is a Bossa Nova love letter to her husband, says there is one Elvis tune that the kids usually love, “They like [Costello’s] Pump It Up, too. But some days they don’t like it. Some days it’s, “No Pump It Up!”

Krall is currently producing Barbra Streisand’s new album. – by John Beaudin

Elton John Feeling Euphoric Over New TV Show ‘Spectacle’
April 5, 2009 – It’s been an interesting ride for Elton John. After becoming one of the biggest Rock stars in the history of music in the seventies, he wrestled with substance abuse and reinvented himself in the eighties, producing more of an AC brand and kicked his demons to the curb. Sure, critics, including myself, thought most of his hits after 1977 wouldn’t stand the test of time but the “Sixty Million Dollar Man” prevailed in the end. Elton’s eighties tunes have faired well and so has he.

For all the bad publicity Elton has managed to redirect his professional and personal life with a few tantrums but mostly with class and a musical discography that continues to get richer. His Aids Foundation has also been his anthem for giving back.

He met Canadian, David Furnish, at a dinner party in 1993 and the pair have had a stabling effect on each other ever since. More
