Fleetwood Mac To Return in Early 2009
Nov. 11, 2008 – Both Lindsey Buckingham and Mick Fleetwood are on the road but not with Fleetwood Mac, that’s going to have to wait until March. Buckingham, who joined the group with then lover Stevie Nicks in the mid seventies says, "We're talking about having rehearsals in January for a tour, which should start in March.” The guitarist adds. "But we're going to be sensible about it. There's going to be time off for family and for Stevie Nicks' voice."
Mick Fleetwood looks at the Mac as sort of like the Rolling Stones or U2, “They take breaks but keep on coming back and keep going. If people stop watching and enjoying us then we will know they have had enough.” The famous adventurous drummer says this tour will be very different from previous outings for the band in that there is no new album to promote, “When we do an album we tend to want to play the new stuff and people have to put up with songs they don’t know, this time we are going into our back catalogue and giving people what they want.”
Fleetwood is currently touring with his blues band with former Mac member Rick Vito.
Buckingham, who just released his first solo album in two years, ‘Gift of Screws,’ needed to be firm with Fleetwood Mac, he needed freedom, "I told the band that I had to put up a boundary, I needed a three year period where they couldn't come knocking on my door. In 2002, I was working on some songs that I was going to put on a solo album, but the band came calling and they got the songs. I just needed this three year break. That allowed me to follow through on two albums."
Buckingham still loves being in Fleetwood Mac, “I'm in a great position. I have my solo career, Fleetwood Mac and most of all, my family."
Since their first appearance at Windsor Jazz and Blues Festival in 1967 Fleetwood Mac has gone through sixteen different members. Though the current line up is not the most popular of its different ensembles, it’s pretty damn close. Christine McVie left after ‘The Dance’ reunion album and tour in 1998. She, along with Buckingham, Mick Fleetwood, Stevie Nick and Christine’s ex-husband John McVie recorded the self titled ‘White album’ in 1975, ‘Tusk’ in 1979 and of course one of the best albums of all time, ‘Rumours’ in 1977. There were other albums but most consider the period between 1975-1979 the high point, at least commercially, for the band. Christine McVie has kept a low profile since leaving the group. She left L.A. and moved back to England. There are no plans for her to rejoin.
In March we reported that Sheryl Crow was planning a collaboration with the band or even becoming a possible replacement for McVie. That has not come to fruition.
