Brie Larson: 5 Things You Might Not Know (From Burgers to Mini-Skirts)
Sure, everyone works hard for an Oscar but Brie Larson dug deep into powerful childhood hurt to get hers. The 2016 Best Actress winner for “Room.”
#1 – For her role as Joy “Ma” Newsome in “Room” Larson turned the calender pages back in her memory of living in a cramped studio apartment at the age of seven and hearing her mother, with her hand over her mouth, quietly sobbing beside her and Brie’s sister hoping they wouldn’t hear. The trio couldn’t even afford a happy meal back then.
#2 – Brie says she owes everything to her mom Heather for that rock-hard support but she has not spoken to her dad in over 10 years. Something that her dad denies. Larson says, “I don’t think he ever really wanted to be a parent.”
#3 – If you think Larson’s pale complexion in “Room” was make-up or effects, not so. She truly wanted to live her character she locked herself in her apartment for weeks, keeping the sun out and dieting until she had just 12% body fat.
#4 – Something we didn’t see on TV Brie hugged all of the fifty sexual assault victims in Lady GaGa’s ‘Til It Happens To You” performance.
#5 – Backstage after winning her Oscar she told reporters about having to wear a mini-skirt to certain auditions. She said, “There were many times that I would go into auditions and a casting director would say, ‘It’s really great. Really love what you’re doing, but we’d love you to come back with a jean miniskirt and high heels.” The actress said that was a “fork in the road” moment – needless to say, she didn’t do it.
Extra fact – At Vanity Fair’s annual Oscar party Brie sported a pair of sneakers as she held a burger in one hand and her Best Actress statuette in the other. She posed for lots of shots including a little ditty with Katy Perry. – by John Beaudin
